Blue Zones — The Secret to Longevity?

The term “Blue Zones” was introduced by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic journalist, in his November 2005 cover story “The Secrets of a Long Life.” Buettner identified five geographic “hot spots” where residents live much longer than average: the Italian island of Sardinia; Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California; the Nicoya Peninsula, an isolated part of Costa Rica; and Ikaria, an isolated Greek island.
